What will it take for you to make a change? In 2004 I made a decision that would change my life forever. I think it’s better shared through an excerpt from my first book titled, FAT CHICK TO COVER MODEL. It’s titled, Truth in the Mirror.

When I entered the studio at the lower level of the Trainer’s Club in Portland, Oregon, everyone was gathered around in a circle chatting softly exchanging stories of the past week. They were so lively and energetic and beautiful. They were some of the healthiest looking people I had ever seen. Everyone looked so young and I felt so out of place, yet I knew I was in the right place. Despite this knowledge, I was not prepared for what would unfold later.

 

The circle opened up a bit and there she was, in the center, shuffling through her music collection with the biggest smile on her face. A welcoming look my way let me know I was about to enter a journey of a lifetime. The conversation was about many things all at once because everyone was so excited. I had never seen people so excited about exercise in my life. My past history of Jane Fonda DVDs and crazy maniac out of control step classes was how I viewed exercise, so seeing these people so pumped up and expectant was something totally new to me.

 

Victoria welcomed me to her class and explained that I would do well and if I got tired, to just stop, step back against the wall and just march in place. She said not to worry, but to just have fun. Then the music started.

 

The three-hour class began with stretching. The moves were so soothing and every muscle, from the muscles surrounding my neck and shoulders to the bottoms of my feet were stretched for flexibility. The music was soft as the lighting in the room. All through the routine, Victoria explained each stretch and purpose of each stretch, explaining the benefit of all the moves. The moves were cleaning, revitalizing and energizing. We focused on breathing techniques and asked to release the cares of the week as we entered into a new week of joy and expectancy. I stretched muscles I never knew I had and the music was soothing and comforting to my spirit and emotions.

 

I was tired from being overworked and lonely from being single and I felt empty. At a recent check-up, I was informed that I had high blood pressure and was pre-diabetic. My doctor suggested that I lose weight, but every plan I would try ended in failure. Most of my energy was spent on my job and numerous community, social, and volunteer groups to avoid having to work on myself I suppose.

 

Bouts of depression led to emotional eating and I didn’t know how to stop the constant struggle with unhealthy food. I didn’t know how to change my situation. I knew I wanted more from life, but didn’t know how to go about getting what I desired. Pouring my energy into work was an escape mechanism allowing feelings to be stuffed down deep. I didn’t know where to turn.

 

The calmness of the studio allowed my mind to flush out all the stress with each stretch. The music lyrics spoke to the inward places in my spirit helping me to open up and absorb the positive energy. When we finished stretching, I felt revitalized and ready for whatever was next as the lights were lifted. But I wasn’t prepared for what I saw next.

 

The walls of the studio were mirrored. There were mirrors in front of me. There were mirrors on the side of me. The reflection I saw looking back at me was not the woman I thought I knew. She was HUGE! She was Fat! She was, ME It was as if scales had been lifted from my eyes and for the first time in years, I was seeing myself as I really was, unfit and unhealthy. My body was very large and it was difficult finding workout clothes to fit me. I had to wear my regular street clothes. I chose a soft pull-over top and a pair of jersey wide-legged pants to be my workout uniform. Not being able to wear normal exercise wear made me feel embarrassed and it was humiliating.

 

A thousand thoughts came to my mind all at once like a flood-gate rushing in. In my mind were many negative thoughts about myself.

 

I knew it was not good to compare myself to others, but when I saw myself along side all the other participants where who were so fit and beautiful, my eyes were open to the truth about my situation and at that moment I had two choices to make.

 

Either I would run away in shame, never to come back to the class again, or stay, face my hurt ego and pride, and toss then both in the garbage so I could be healed once and for all. I had come to learn later after my dramatic weight loss that very few people, once faced with the same truth, would have chosen to stay.

 

My staying in the room that day and for many days afterward, was one of the greatest things I had ever had done for myself and I learned that it is the people who can face the truth that can become free.

 

I wasn’t prepared learn how inflexible I was or how I couldn’t keep up with everyone. I would get out of breath easily and could not get through the workouts without numerous breaks. I would have to stand against the back of the room and march-in-place many times while watching the others participating in the exercises with ease.

 

Just walking normally caused me to sweat, so doing aerobic exercises unleashed floods of perspiration that was embarrassing. Tears are streaming from my eyes as I am writing this chapter, because it brings back memories of that day, but I am so glad that I didn’t run out the room and stayed to face the truth.

 

A Masterpiece at the End of the Journey

 

For you my dear friend, it will be the same. You will have to make the same decision I made many years ago. When you finally face the truth of your situation, will you run away in shame? Or, will you face the truth and allow the truth to set you free?

 

The marvelous conclusion is this. Allow humility to enter your life. Know that you are in the right place at the right time. Know that today is the first day of your new life and the beginning of the unveiling of what will be a masterpiece at the end of the journey.

 

Every move you make is a move toward a better you. Every move in the right direction is like one stitch in the garment of your new being. Each move is like an individual stitch. It takes thousands of stitches to complete a garment worthy to be worn with praise. So know that every effort you make and every goal you reach is taking you to the ultimate goal. Keeping on the journey ended in an unexpected reward.

 

The unveiling for me was the day I appeared on the cover of People Magazine on the May 21st in 2007. That issue, like all issues, went nationwide. Can you imagine? Billions of people read that issue! Perhaps the president of the United States read that issue! Internationally, people read the article and saw for themselves that it was possible to lose 100 pounds without surgery and without a fad diet (which was People Magazine’s requirement to be in the article).

 

The five other women, who were featured in the magazine along with me, didn’t lose the weight quickly either. It took time. For me, it took 3 years. To some people, this may seem like a long time especially, if you think losing weight is agony. I do admit, it was very difficult the first 3 months, but after the initial months of becoming adjusted to the new lifestyle changes, it become easier and this will happen for you as well.

 

Any new endeavor takes some adjustment. You will be successful some days and some days you will not be as successful. Know that every step you take toward the goal is a step well taken. Your effort will not go unacknowledged.

 

You’ve got to be willing to do anything! You’ve got to be willing to do what it takes to reach your goal of weight loss success. If you don’t, you will always find yourself on the roller coaster of yo-yo dieting and never reaching your goal of being fit and trim.

 

Besides the ultimate benefit of looking great and improving your health, imagine the impact your life will make on others? That’s just how powerful this change will be not only for you, but also for others.

 

Realize and face the truth! Your truth! Don’t give another excuse why this time it won’t work. Take action, and know that his time you will reach your goal. Make it work this time and do all that is necessary. I know you can do it.

And don’t let what you see be the ULTIMATE TRUTH. The REAL truth is you are a victorious person who is capable of reaching your goal if you will put forth the effort. Don’t let anything stop you.

Belly Fat and Ground Hog Day– What do they have in Common?

Have you seen the 1993-fantasy comedy movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murry and Andie MacDowell? Without spoiling it for you by giving all the details (it really is a must see if you haven’t seen it, I suggest you do), Bill Murray plays Phil Connors, an arrogant Pittsburgh TV weatherman who, during an assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event on February 2nd in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, he finds himself in a time loop, repeating the same day again and again.

 

So, what does this movie have to do with Belly fat?

One of the things I think people do all the time when they want to change their body is to resort to things they’ve tried before even though it didn’t work. And they find themselves like Bill Murray, doing the same things over and over and never getting anywhere. It’s like the saying, trying to get different results using the same actions. It’s a recipe for insanity.

It can be really discouraging when you find diets that say they help reduce belly fat and they don’t. To be honest, some programs are just way too difficult to stick to for long periods of time and when you can’t adhere to the stringent diet program, you may feel like a failure when in reality, it’s the program that just didn’t deliver.

Or…

Some people are just know it alls. They’re the ones that say…“ I know what to do…I just have to eat better, exercise more, and not drink so much…blah, blah, blah” But, it’s really more complex.

 

Why should you want to get rid of our belly fat?

 

The main reason why you want to lose your belly fat is because it’s dangerous!!! It’s the cause of almost every major disease including cancer. We all know this, but why is it so hard to lose fat especially around the mid-section?

 

The reason why losing belly fat is difficult.

 

The reason you have belly fat in the first place and the reason why it’s so difficult to lose is because the problem is hormonal. It’s caused by an imbalance of 4 important hormones: high insulin, high cortisol, high estrogen, and low testosterone.

 

High Insulin: Insulin is an essential hormone excreted by the pancreas. Its main function is to process sugar in the bloodstream and carry it into cells to be used as fuel or stored as fat. How do you know if your insulin levels maybe higher than normal? You are eating too many nutrient-poor carbs from processed foods like packaged low-fat foods, sugary drinks including alcohol, desserts, chips, and other packaged snack foods. In addition, you are not eating enough foods with loads of fiber. Over time, a high level of insulin causes metabolic syndrome (or insulin resistance) and type 2 diabetes.

 

High Cortisol: Are you continually stressed? Then even slightly over normal levels of stress can cause the body to increase its level of cortisol. Cortisol is an important hormone that helps the body with self-preservation. It’s the hormone that detects danger by helping the body cope. In modern times, bears don’t chase us or lions or we are not in life threatening situations every minute. However, in our modern age, we can ‘feel’ as if our lives are threatened if we are stressed at work or experiencing difficult relationships or if life seems overwhelming. Persistently elevated levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, are very detrimental to your health as well as to your body composition. If you suffer from a mood disorder such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder or exhaustion, or if you have a digestive issue such as irritable bowel syndrome, you can bet your body is cranking up your cortisol. Not only does it increase your appetite and cravings, it causes a loss of muscle mass, libido and bone density, and also contributes to depression and memory loss.

 

 

High Estrogen: What are the signs? A big belly in men. What causes it? The imbalance of the other hormones; insulin and cortisol caused by an imbalance of food choices. Even if you’re trying to eat healthy, it’s just not helping. That’s because the imbalance is causing a high level of estrogen to resulting in a conversion of testosterone to estrogen. High levels of estrogen increase a man’s risk of prostate cancer. Women who suffer from PMS may have high levels of estrogen causing fat to accumulate not only in your belly but also around your hips and thighs. A sign you have too much estrogen; it’s hard to lose weight. Other signs are low libido, memory loss, poor motivation, depression, and loss of muscle mass.

 

Low Testosterone: Testosterone levels decrease as abdominal fat converts it to estrogen, and also with increasing stress. While you are under stress, your body will tend to make more stress hormone (cortisol) than testosterone. Testosterone levels tend to taper off with aging, obesity and stress, but today men are experiencing testosterone decline much earlier in life, around the age of 25 and 30!! What are the signs? A loss of muscle tissue, depression, and decreased strength, stamina, drive and motivation. If you have your testosterone levels measured with a blood test, be sure to ask that both free and total testosterone be measured.

 

Here’s How You can Lose Your Belly Fat!

 

To lower insulin levels, bump up your protein. Increasing your protein intake keeps your blood sugar balanced and your insulin levels low – a metabolic must for appetite control and fat loss. Protein also packs a hormonal punch because it stimulates the activity of many of our fat-burning and appetite-controlling hormones when we consume it in the right amounts.

 

To lower cortisol levels: Get enough sleep .You must sleep at least 7.5 to 9 hours per night. Sleep deprivation makes us wake up with higher amounts of the stress hormone cortisol, which fuels appetite and increases our cravings, particularly for sugary and carb-laden treats, even when we have eaten enough. Not only does poor sleep pack on pounds, good sleep actually helps you to lose weight by influencing the hormones that control your appetite and increase your metabolism.

 

To lower estrogen levels: Green tea and turmeric have a negative effect on estrogen and helps the body to rid belly fat. It does it by correcting the balance of estrogen to testosterone. Also, adding more fiber to your diet such as ground flax and chia seeds to help assist your body to eliminate harmful estrogen. Too much estrogen in women has been the cause of several types of cancer.

 

To increase testosterone; add the herb tribulus terrestris and supplement with zinc. Women can have low testosterone too. Weight training helps increase testosterone levels as well as getting enough protein.

 

Now you know how to combat belly fat and get rid of it for good! No more doing the same thing over and over again like Phil in Ground Hog’s Day.

February Self-Love Challenge! How I Turned Around My Valentine’s Day Disaster!

Do you mind if I share my heart for a few minutes and get a little transparent and authentic? No matter how much I think I love myself, something always happens to show me that I definitely need to keep working on it.

 

Like the year I bought a guy I had been dating for a short time (about 2 1/2 months- the dates had been amazing! He was fun and I always had a great time with him and I thought he felt the same way about me) Valentine’s Day gifts assuming he liked me enough to do the same. In fact, he asked me out on the day before Valentines Day. Sure sign that I wasn’t on his Valentine’s Day priority list. He accepted my gifts without any explanation of why he didn’t have anything for me and I was too embarrassed to say anything.

 

Just the simple fact that I was too afraid to bring up the subject and that he didn’t care enough about me to give an explanation of why he didn’t give me anything (he accepted the gifts and said ‘thanks’…nothing else) let me know I had a long way to go in the area of self love. It wasn’t so much the exchange of gifts that was the real issue.

 

The real issue was me. I keep attracting emotionally unavailable men! Maybe I’M not as emotionally available as I think I am. I’m not sure, but to be honest, dating has really been very complex for me. And when February comes around, its just another reminder of how much I still have to learn in the area of romantic love. So, I decided after that incident, that I would begin treating Valentine’s Day differently.

 

Now, when Valentine’s Day Comes around, I make it a point to take the entire month and make it a special month of self-care, self-adoration, and self-fulfillment no matter if I am dating someone or not.

 

Most women I know are Big Hearted Women. We love easily and are giving. In fact too giving. It’s hard for me to be the BITCH in order to get and hold a man’s attention. I don’t like having to memorize and live by all the games suggested by some of the popular self-help books. It’s like the suggestions are against my nature. Perhaps they really do work, but one thing for sure…before anything will work, I know in my heart, I have to love self myself more and feel I am worthy of a love I desire and deserve because the world reflects back to us what our beliefs are.

 

Self-love is also important when it comes to health. I had to love myself enough to take the action to change my body. I loved myself enough and took a leap of faith by getting a coach to help me. The coaching, education, and training I received that helped me lose over 100 pounds was the catalyst to my transformation, but if it wasn’t my dedication to loving myself enough to change my body, no coach or trainer could have helped me.

 

Back to Valentine’s Day. I am well aware that Valentine’s Day was created as a huge marketing tool to stimulate the economy, yet every year I fall prey to all the beautiful hearts and roses that fill every store during the month of February. It’s hard not to get swallowed up in the hype. And, no matter how hard I try to say to myself it doesn’t matter that I don’t have anyone serious in my life, I still feel a little empty instead of filled with love and compassion just for the sake of it.

 

That’s why I created the February Self-Love Challenge

Here’s how it works. For every day during the entire month of February (this year is a leap year, so we get 29 days instead of 28 days to love ourselves even more) everyday you celebrate yourself by doing a self-love action. You can make up your own or use a few of the following 45 ideas:

 

1.Take a bubble bath or a shower wearing a tiara.

2.Read about a new interesting topic.

3.Sing.

4.Go on a self-love spending spree and stock up on super foods, organic skin care and coconut water, Juice Plus+ capsules or Complete Shakes (you can ask me about these J)

5.Go to your favorite hairdresser and get a new hairstyle or color.

  1. Make your personal health your priority. Make an appointment with a health coach, or research information on how to get healthier. It’s a simple act of love to yourself which will permeate all areas of your life.
  2. Take a Yoga, Pilates, Kickboxing class, or whatever turns you on….do it!
  3. Grow or buy a new plant.
  4. Do a detox.
  5. STOP doing something that no longer serves you. Smoking. Drinking. Hating. Resenting.
  6. Kiss yourself…on the shoulder. Hand. Foot. Tell yourself you love yourself
  7. Be still. Listen. Feel. Allow yourself to fill with the love and wisdom of the infinite
  8. Stay in your pajamas for a full 24 hours.
  9. Love. See your life through the eyes of love
  10. Appreciate the abundance that you are experiencing right now.
  11. Buy yourself that special something that you’ve been dreaming of. You deserve it.
  12. Take yourself out on a date.
  13. Kiss and cuddle a sweet, furry animal
  14. Fall in love with yourself.
  15. Drink a large glass of purified water. And then another one.
  16. Learn something new. A new skill. A new philosophy. A new habit. Expand your current life experience by adding to it.
  17. Thank yourself for all that you do.
  18. Choose to change your perspective to one that makes you feel good. You have the power.
  19. Start a healthy nutrition plan to: lose weight, gain weight, or simply to improve your health.

  22. Try something new. A new place. A new road. A new taste. A new person.

Forgive yourself.

  1. Start dressing in a way, which makes you, feel sexy & confident… As opposed to just following what’s in style. Not all silhouettes suit all people. There are definitely styles that are best for individual body types. Once you know what works for you, make the most of it! Few things make you feel better than knowing that you look great.
  2. Meditate
  3. Dance in public.
  4. Go on a nature adventure
  5. Snuggle up early one evening with your favorite drink and just listen to the world pass by. Preferably on a rainy night.
  6. Keep your Radical Self Love totem on you at all times & start telling people about it.
  7. Explore your sexuality.
  8. Find a mantra & hold it close. Like; Om Namah Shivaya, roughly translated, means “Greetings to She Who I am Becoming” &/or “With great respect, I honor my heart”.
  9. Stretch in the mornings.
  10. Think of a way you could make your life easier — then do it.
  11. Make lists of reasons why you love yourself…
  12. Take a 2-minute self-appreciation break.
  13. Try something new.
  14. Make a green smoothie.

Want to make it really fun? Get a special Valentines Day Journal and write all your actions steps in it and keep tract of what you learn during the process. It will teach you a lot about who you are and how to love yourself 100%.

 

When I look back on that disastrous Valentine’s Day, I don’t blame him or even myself. There are no bad situations only learning experiences and I look at every situation as an opportunity for self-growth and discovery.

 

Also, regardless if I want to attract a love relationship or any relationship for that matter and if I want to be treated with love and respect, I have to love myself first, so much so, that everyone I come in contact with feels the love energy around me and loves and respects me easily and naturally. Most importantly, the creator, the divine source of all that is love ME and YOU and has a silver cord linking it’s heart to ours and we learn must tap into that love, guidance, and support in order to experience the free flow of love and joy.

Are You Addicted to Sugar???

About 5 years ago, I had a client who admitted to me that she had a REAL sugar addiction. I asked her, “How do you kn

ow?” she said because:

I’m constantly thinking of sweets all the time.

I can’t go a day without a drinking at least 1 soda pop.

After a couple of days on a healthy diet plan, I find myself in the super market with a pie in my grocery cart and I say,” Tomorrow I’ll do better.”

 

I’m the type of coach that never judges ANYONE because I know what it’s like to have food addictions. And because I’ve experienced them myself and I’ve worked with so many people who deal with the same issue, I feel it’s time to share the truth about sugar, why people can get addicted to it and what they can do about it.

 

Since the beginning of our existence as we developed in our mother’s womb, we were pumped-up to the sugar hose. Not accusing your mom of being a sugar addict, but most all natural foods and processed foods contain a form sugar so it’s natural to like sweet foods from before birth.

 

Sugars are classified as being glucose, fructose, maltose, sucralose, maltos, galactose, and others from the combinations of these sugars. They are part of the structures in natural fruits, vegetables, whole grains and diary as well as processed foods such as refined carbohydrates like

bagels, breads, pastas, etc. Refined sugar sources are the root of all evil and the cause of most sugar cravings and addiction.

 

Let’s take a step back for a minute…The fact is, we need sugars from an adequate intake of carbohydrates and these sugars are necessary for the complete metabolism of fats to carbon dioxide and water in our bodies and for energy. It was meant to come from natural foods not from all the processed foods Americans have become accustomed too.

Why is Sugar so Addictive?

Sugar has a powerful impact on the reward centers of the brain. When we eat foods that contain a lot of sugar, a massive amount of dopamine is released in an area of the brain called the Nucleus Accumbens. When we eat these foods often and in large amounts, the dopamine receptors start to down-regulate. This means that the next time we eat these foods, their effect is blunted. We will need more junk food next time we eat in order to get the same level of reward. Sugar and other junk foods, due to their powerful effect on the reward centers of the brain, function similarly to drugs of abuse like cocaine and nicotine.

In my opinion, I think all Americans are addicted to sugar at some level. You may think I’m generalizing, but unless you eat ZERO processed foods then you are not a sugar addict. AND people who eat this way do so because they know what its like to be chained and imprisoned in the sugar dungeon. But the line is drawn when we can’t stop eating sugar.

How Much Sugar Should You Have Daily?

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that we limit our daily sugar consumption to 7% or less of our daily calorie intake—that’s about 6 teaspoons (100 calories) for women and 9 teaspoons (150 calories) for men. But that adds up fast. Just one 12-ounce can of regular soda contains 8-10 teaspoons of sugar and 130-150 calories. One glazed donut contains 6 teaspoons, and a half-cup ice cream (the standard serving size, although most portions are much, much larger) contains 4 grams of added sugar!

Despite the claims from health agencies, there still seems to be so much controversy around what is considered a right amount of sugar intake. I think it’s about comes down to how YOU decide to relate to sugar. Here is a simple test to see if you are addicted to sugar.

Below are a series of statements. For each one you must give yourself a score of 0 (you never do it) to 4 (you do it four or more times a week.) At the end add your scores up, to see where you sit on the sugar scale. Please score yourself honestly!

 Here is your score criteria:

0 – Never
1 – Once per month
2 – Two to three times per month
3 – Two to three times per week
4 – Four or more times per week

 Answer each question truthfully:

  1. I find myself consuming certain sugary food or drink even though I am no longer hungry.
  2. I worry about cutting down on certain foods, even healthy organic foods.
  3. I often feel sluggish or fatigued because I overeat carbohydrates.
  4. I find myself searching for something sweet after meals.
  5. I have had physical withdrawal symptoms such as agitation and anxiety when I cut down on food containing sugar (Do NOT include caffeinated drinks: coffee, tea, cola, energy drinks, etc.)
  6. Eating certain food containing sugar, such as cakes, biscuits or fizzy drinks cheers me up.
  7. My behavior with respect to food and eating causes me significant distress.
  8. Issues related to food and eating decrease my ability to function effectively (daily routine, job/school, social or family activities, health difficulties).

 Score Yourself:

Score 0-8 – You are not a sugar addict: You do not have a problem with sugar, and do not need to worry about sugar.

Score 9-16 – You are on the borderline: our sugar cravings are under control, but keep an eye on them, so they don’t stray into higher figures.

Score 17-24 – You are climbing over the fence: Your sugar is getting out of control…you need to seriously cutback.

Score 25 and overYou are a sugar addict: Your reliance from sugar is out of control and you must cut back now, the amount of sugar you consume could be damaging your health.

So how did you do? If your score led you to discovering that you are in the sugar danger zone, what can you do in moving forward?

How to Stop Sugar Addiction

I believe it’s a personal thing, and I don’t think people should suffer. It’s a challenge to lose weight and to have to deal with a sugar addiction at the same time.  I believe in taking baby steps. That’s why it took me 3 years to lose a little over 100 pounds where some people have taken a shorter amount of time. It’s because I had to deal with a lot of food addictions. Some people feel giving up sugar cold turkey is best. Perhaps its all up to personal preference and personality type.

When I was addicted to carbs and sweets, everyday I made sure I had naturally sweet foods in my diet from fresh or frozen fruits. When I first stated out, I ate all the calorie-reduced desserts, but over time, my taste changed after eating more naturally sweet fruits and I no longer wanted the artificial sweetness from low calorie desserts and sugar substitutes.

Getting to the Root

According to Louise Hay, the popular metaphysical healing practitioner, the root cause of craving sweets is that your life is missing sweetness. I mean think about it, there maybe some truth to this. If so, get to the root by changing your lifestyle and incorporating things people and activities that make you feel good about life and yourself.

Sugar by far is a hard habit to break. Thank goodness there’s so many natural ways to get ‘sweetness’ in your nutrition so that you have the good of both worlds.

My body shape is more of an apple and I’ve had to work very hard at getting the hourglass body I have today. It’s not perfect and it’s something you always have to maintain. 3 Hormones that Cause Belly Fat and What You can Do About it!! Part 1.

As you may already know from following my blogs, is that I lost over 100 pounds after years of dieting and fighting with my weight. But, even after losing the weight I still had a really big issue…belly FAT!

Part of the problem was my posture. Standing straight, pulling back and pushing down my shoulders helped a great deal. I was taught through professional dance lessons that my posture had to be correct in order to keep my core stable and this was not natural for me, so even to this day, I have to constantly remind myself to stand erect, not to slouch, etc., but it never dawned on me that 3 key hormones were preventing me from having a flat stomach; Cortisol, Insulin and Estrogen.

Cortisol, Insulin, and Estrogen, when too high, will completely wipe out all your fat burning hormones – (You have 6 naturally accruing fat burning hormones in your body), if you don’t get these three under control.

Cortisol is created when we are stressed. I worked in an industry that had me stressed out 24/7. I had just moved to Florida and the adjustment to living in a new state and new city and finding work that fit my talents and skills and salary expectations was extremely challenging and I had cortisol pumping in my system continuously. So much so, that my sleep was disturbed and I had trouble keeping my weight under control.

Cortisol is created in the adrenal glands right above the kidneys and this is an important hormone, but not when triggered to be released all the time.

This is the hormone that kicks in when we feel under attack and really do have to move quickly to save our lives. But in modern days, our stress comes from things like our kids misbehaving, a horrible boss, marital problems, or trying to live a life where you have to balance many responsibilities. In many of us this hormone is on 24/7. When this hormone is ‘on’ losing weight can be a long hard struggle.

The second hormone is insulin. Insulin is triggered by sugar and it’s main job is to regulate sugar or glucose in the blood. But, when we are not eating properly or at inappropriate times or in quantities that do mot match our body composition requirements, then this hormone becomes out of balance and causes weight gain or it makes losing weight difficult and if not controlled, over time can cause serious health problems like diabetes.

The third hormone is estrogen. Men and women have estrogen in their bodies but having too much can cause not only weight gain, and difficulty losing weight, but it can also cause diseases such as cancer if not regulated. Estregon is also in the food supply; prepackaged diet foods and some protein powdered supplements are tainted with estrogen. Excess estrogen in men shows up as an oversized belly and man boobs! And guys, you don’t want this at all!

So how do you regulate and control these hormones so you can get rid of belly fat? I’ve learned from my celebrity trainer that it takes a system to get amazing abs and a flat belly not just doing one or two things. Here’s the system:

  1. You’ve got to be eating right, – this includes making sure you are eating clean food from the major food groups; protein, vegetables and healthy fats. Limit fruit intake but, make sure you supplement your diet with antioxidants so your body will still be able to get the benefits of a variety of fruit enzymes. The anti-oxidant formulations I use are Juice Plus+ and Body Balance.
  2. In addition to eating right, you’ve got to detox your body. Detoxing meaning eliminating sugar from your diet, drinking more water (at least 8-8oz glasses per day or ½ your body weight in ounces), taking a phytonutrient supplement to help your cells pull in nutrients that will help destroy the toxins in your fat cells.
  3. You’ve got to do at least 30-60 minutes of cardio (the right cardio for your body type) 5-6 days per week. Many guys like to just do strength training, but they forget that doing cardio is equally important.
  4. Abdominal workouts that focus on strengthening the muscles and flattening the abs are a must. But, done incorrectly can make matters worse. So, get with a trainer who is an expert at abdominal training so you will be doing the exercises correctly.
  5. Practicing correct posture. Most people have horrible posture. I include myself in this statement and I have to work hard on standing and sitting straight. How you stand and sit will help redirect the position of your abdominal muscles keeping them strong and supportive, thus helping to create flat abs.
  6. Eliminate night time eating and/or eat at least 2 hours before bed or if you do eat before bed, keep the meal small and clean such as a small piece of protein and a veggie snack or even a small serving of a protein shake.
  7. Get plenty of sleep. Sleep helps the body produce your anti-aging hormone HGH. HGH keeps your body get and stay strong and helps to speed up your fat burning metabolism. If you get at least 8 hours of sleep per night, you will see your abs getting flatter faster.

I’ve simplified this system for the purpose of explaining the steps and in reality each step can be explained fully and customized based on you as in individual. That’s what nutrition and fitness coaching is all about.

3 Things YOUR FAT Hates!! Part I

The first thing your FAT hates is alkaline foods! If you want to inilolate fat, destroy it, kick it to the curb, and make it think twice about showing up on your belly and thighs again than eat anything and everything that is alkaline.

What are alkaline foods?

Food is either acidic or alkaline. Your body loves being in balance. It feels good, has the most energy and health when it’s in balance because it means your immune system, the system that helps you fight colds, flu, illnesses and diseases, is working in peak condition.

When the body gets too much acidic food like the following;

Bread, ice cream, pasta, soda pop, candy, coffee, chips, French fries, coffee creamer, cereal (except oats), cheese and dairy, red meat, rice, sweet desserts, and processed meats like bacon, lunch meats, and most processed foods it goes into fighting mode!! All your body’s health systems HATE these kinds of foods even though your tongue love them…LOL. and will fight back by producing FAT. These foods weaken your immune system making it hard for your body to keep you away from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Even allergies and other more common illnesses can be linked to foods like this.

Your FAT LOVESSSSS these foods!!! Your FAT has the biggest house party every time you graze on foods like these and bringing more of its friends (more fat cells) to the party.

So How do You Fight the Fat?

 The first way you can get rid of FAT is to start eating foods that are alkaline. They help heal your body. They have disease-fighting chemicals called antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other things called phytonutients, millions of them, that come into your body like a police raid and destroy fat fast!

Alkaline foods like: anything green, spinach, kale, cabbage, etc. lemons, limes, most fruits, whole grains like quinoa, buckwheat, oats, millet, and animal proteins like fish and chicken. healthy fats like olive oil, and seeds like flax seed, grape seed, etc.

Above is a simple chart you can use to give you a guide. Does it mean you have to only eat alkaline foods? You will get rid of FAT if 80-90% of what you eat is alkaline. Eat acid foods on occasion and you will see the scale numbers drop and your pant size too.

Heres a fast trick…most acidic foods don’t have much color, but alkaline foods have all the beautiful colors of the rainbow…that’s a fast way to know if its alkine.

Does eating alkaline sound BORING!! ?? Does it leave a bad taste in your mouth? Well, it all comes down to knowing how to make the foods taste amazing! Here is on of my most popular recipes my clients and patients just LOVE!!

Egg Muffins

Ingredients

  • (To go 12 muffin full throttle, just double the batch)
  • 1 bell pepper (your favorite color)
  • 3 spring onions
  • 4 little cherry tomatoes/one normal tomato
  • 6 Eggs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 12 slot muffin tin
  • Optional – these all-go great. Add whatever you want!
  • 2 slices cheese; around 50g (eg. cheddar)
  • Handful spinach/green leaves
  • 2-3 splashes of hot sauce or curry powder
  • Baking paper or muffin cups (only if you don’t have a nonstick muffin tin)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/ 350F
  2. Wash and dice the pepper, onions and tomatoes and put them in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Mix 6 whole eggs or 3 who eggs and the rest egg whites and add them to the bowl of veggies.
  4. Optionally add some hot sauce, curry powder…whatever you like. Hot sauce is great!
  5. Spray the muffin tin with oil and pour the egg mixture evenly into the muffin slots. (If you think they might still stick to the pan use some muffin cups or cut out some baking paper and to use as cups – definitely saves time on doing the washing up 😉
  6. If you’re so inclined then layering some cheese over the top of each muffin before they go into the oven is a delicious addition! You can also mix in the cheese to the batter.
  7. Pop the tray into the oven for 25-30 minutes or until the tops are firm to the touch.
  8. Bon Appétit!!

Notes

EQUIPMENT:
Please make sure to use a non-stick muffin tin. That way you won’t have to scrape around after your baking session. You can get a good one for around 10 bucks, easy.

These eggy muffins are amazng! They taste great AND fight the FAT!

Egg muffins can be eaten any time and cover all the bases. You’ve got healthy protein, healthy fats, and loads of alkaline veggies. Your entire family will love these! I like them because if I feel like I want the ‘bad acidic ‘ foods like pizza, I just make my egg muffins like a healthy egg pizza. I put in turkey sausage or bacon and a little healthier cheese like feta to give it a nice cheesy taste without all the saturated fat like a real pizza would have. Everyone in your family will love these, so none of that having to fix several meals to please everyone while you’re trying to lose the weight (fat weight).

MY Big Fat FAT-LOSS Discovery!!

My BIG FAT LOSS DISCOVERY!! Woohoo!!!

I was working with Dr X, can’t give his name, due to confidentiality, and he was a true genius at weight loss (very few doctors know about real weight loss). I thought I knew all there was about teaching my clients and patients how to lose weight, but I did not know this one thing that could totally turn your body into a fat burning machine!

 

He taught me that I needed to focus on losing a FAT!! Not weight! It dawned on me that he was right! I didn’t know why I had not figured this out earlier. I knew about fat loss, but not completely nor did I have neither the scientific knowledge nor the articulation to convey this information to my patients, other than how important it was to get enough protein in the diet to lose weight effectively.

I knew it was important to make sure you get the RIGHT kinds of nutrients to lose weight faster, but I didn’t know how to measure the results effectively enough and the scales I had in the medical office were not the right kind to give me that information.

 

I got more than amazing results with my patient BEFORE I knew this secret, but afterward, the results were more consistent with each patient and I could ‘fine-tune’ adjust, modify someone’s plan FASTER, MORE EFFECTIVELY, with results that were mind boggling!!

 

One patient had been at a plateau for months. He wasn’t following the secret I shared with him because he didn’t believe he could eat that much food and still lose weight…or lose FAT. He wasn’t convinced it would help HIM. I showed him the results I got with other patients, but he just couldn’t grasp it for himself until finally one day he was tired of the stalemate results of following his own way.

 

After following my program for 12 weeks he lost a total al 33 fat pounds!!! Fat only, not his muscle, or organs, or bone or other vital body tissues! He went from a body fat percent of 36.70 to 27.25. He had a total of 91.76 pounds of fat on his body and was down to having only 58.59 and some of that fat was healthy fat that he could keep…he was almost at his goal and it shocked him!

 

Another patient lost 7 pounds in 3 months according to her at home scale, but using the information from the FAT LOSS Secrets, she really lost a total of 12.5 pounds body fat and gained 4.6 pounds of lean muscle which she needed to gain anyway because her muscle weight was too low making it hard to lose weight.

 

They both lost fat without starving, giving up all the foods they love, and without feeling like they were on a diet.

That’s why I love the program I developed so that you can get the same results at home working me your coach! I always suggest people seek medical supervision when losing weight, yet you still have to know for yourself because not all medical weight loss programs are safe, just because it’s under the roof of a physician’s office.

In addition, focusing on just losing fat is not the total answer either! You have to take a holistic approach…a mind, body, soul approach otherwise you won’t really be changing our mind. You body can’t change for good unless it undergoes total mental transformation.
